Marco, ora puoi dircelo: ci credevi davvero? “La verità? All’inizio del weekend, no. Ancora una volta, le cose si stavano mettendo male. Poi, finalmente, la fortuna è girata.” Lo avevamo detto più volte, che ormai il conto con la sfortuna lo avevi pagato. E con gli interessi. “Sì, ma l’inizio del fine settimana di gara è stato comunque molto complicato. Prima, nelle prove libere 2, quando al mio compagno di equipaggio Niki (Cadei, ndr) è esploso il portamozzo distruggendo la macchina. I meccanici hanno dovuto lavorare fino alle 7 del mattino successivo per ripararla. Poi, nelle qualifiche 1 ho fatto la pole, mentre nella seconda sessione, per un problema elettrico, la macchina non si metteva in moto. E sapevamo di dover partire per ultimi.” Gara-1, partito dalla pole, l’hai vinta con apparente facilità. Invece, questa famigerata seconda manche? “È partito Niki e nel corso del suo stint è stato fantastico, ha superato praticamente tutti i concorrenti. A quel punto ha ceduto la macchina a me, già in una buona posizione. Ma ero tesissimo…” Quando hai capito che ce la potevi fare? “Alla partenza, seguendo le procedure dal box, ho visto che la vettura del mio rivale di tutta la stagione, Dayraut, non era partita. Lì ho iniziato a sperare, ma la pressione è aumentata allo stesso tempo.” Per tutto il tuo stint non hai commesso errori. Poi, sono arrivati gli ultimi giri, quelli che ti dividevano dal tuo primo titolo in carriera. “Sì, è stata una sensazione indimenticabile. Da un lato non volevo perdere la concentrazione per non commettere errori, dall’altro prestavo orecchio a tutti i minimi rumori e pensavo: ‘Speriamo che non si rompa questo, speriamo che non si rompa quello’. Beh, è andato tutto bene!” Ora come ti senti? “Sono contentissimo, è il mio primo campionato vinto in assoluto e sarà di certo un grosso trampolino di lancio per una carriera futura ancora più importante.” Chi vuoi ringraziare? “Innanzitutto i meccanici e tutta la squadra, che nel corso di tutta la stagione non hanno mai smesso di crederci, di lavorare al 100% anche nei momenti di crisi. Ovviamente il mio compagno Niki. E i miei genitori, sostegno di tutta la mia carriera. È proprio il caso di dire che senza di loro non sarei qui.” Ora, come festeggerai? “Dopo la gara ci sono state tutte le foto di rito, poi sono rientrato a Milano e ho passato la serata con i miei amici. In settimana faremo una grossa cena con tutti i meccanici, poi ci sarà ancora il gran galà delle premiazioni ufficiali.”
English version Interview to Marco Frezza, 2010 GT Open GTS champion Marco, now you can tell us: did you really believe you could win? “The truth? At the beginning of the weekend, I didn’t. Once again, things were getting bad for us. Then, finally, luck turned.” We said several times that you had paid your bill to misfortune. With interests. “Yes, but the beginning of the weekend was very complicated anyway. First, during Free Practice 2, when my team-mate Niki (Cadei) had a wheel failure and destroyed the car. Mechanics had to work until 7 am to repair it. Then, in Qualifying 1 I got pole position, while in the second session, due to an electrical problem, the car didn’t start. And we knew we had to start last.” You easily won Race-1 from pole. What about the second race? “Niki started and was great during his stint, overtaking pretty much all of our rivals. Then he gave me the car, already in a good position. But I was very nervous...” When did you realize you could do it? “At the start, which I was following from the pits, I saw my all-season rival Dayraut’s car hadn’t started. That was when I began to hope, but pressure went high at the same time.” Throughout your stint you didn’t make any mistake. Then, the final laps came, which divided you from your first carreer title. “Yes, it was an unforgettable feeling. I didn’t want to lose my concentration to avoid making any mistakes, but I was also hearing every small noise and thinking: ‘I hope this or that won’t break!’. But everything went well.” Now how do you feel? “I’m very happy. That’s my first championship win and it will be for sure a big stepstone for an even more important future carreer.” Who do you want to thank? “First of all the mechanics and all my team, who during the season never stopped believing and working 100 pc even during the critical moments. Obviously my team-mate Niki. And my parents, who supported all my carreer. It’s fair to say that without them I wouldn’t be here.” How will you celebrate now? “After the race I posed for the usual photos, then I went back to Milan and spent the night with my friends. During the week we’ll have a big dinner with all my mechanics and then there will be the official prize giving gala.”
